Course Description
This course is designed for cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, critical care specialists, nurses, and all healthcare professionals who work with post-cardiac surgery patients and wish to learn a new, evidence-based approach to resuscitation following cardiac arrest in these patients. Using a format similar to Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), this program includes didactic lectures and multiple workshops (epicardial pacemaker use, internal and external defibrillation, emergency resternotomy protocols, among others). This knowledge is acquired through state-of-the-art simulation in our training laboratory. COURSE OBJECTIVES: • Identify unique characteristics of cardiac surgery patients that justify modifications to standard resuscitation techniques.
• Distinguish the key differences between ACLS and CALS protocols • Describe the standardized protocol for the treatment of cardiac arrest in a cardiac surgery patient • Discuss the 5-point plan • Develop the ability to implement a successful emergency re-sternotomy protocol within 5 minutes.
